Veranos de la Villa: This summer, enjoy the Spanish culture!

13 Aug

Another summer is here, and once again Madrid is ready to celebrate one of the events that best express its idiosyncrasy and its particular way of understanding and enjoying culture: the Veranos de la Villa. The tradition began in 1985, when a dearly beloved mayor was at the helm of City Hall: Enrique Tierno Galván. In that prodigious decade, it was Tierno Galván who approved the first edition of a festival which has now become an inextricable part of the cultural life and heritage of Madrid.

As heirs of the rich history and brilliant track record consolidated over these past years, in 2010 we will strive harder than ever to restore the spirit that brought this festival to life. And what better way to do this than to continue being a point of convergence and popular forum, bringing together a wide variety of artists from every field and a Madrid eager for concerts and unforgettable summer evenings.

Once again, we will delve into the intense fusion of genres and performances that the festival always offers, though there are a few surprises in store. This Summer, Make It to Madrid is the motto under which the festival will offer more than 151 stage projects and 1,156 performances to make the summer heat more bearable.

For the second year running, rock, pop, jazz, flamenco, folk, reggae, R&B, soul, raï and gospel music will ring out from the Escenario Puerta del Ángel, while another of the festival’s most appealing open-air venues, the Sabatini Gardens, will fill the night of Madrid with the soaring melodies of zarzuela, flamenco and fado.

And we mustn’t forget our annual appointment with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and the great maestro Daniel Barenboim. Once again, the Plaza Mayor will host a concert where we can enjoy music that “sounds” a call for solidarity and tolerance among the peoples of the Earth.

The Summers on the Street will also return, flooding the corners where this city’s true soul resides with art. The series will offer an encounter with classical music in the imposing Plaza de Oriente and with haunting world music at the ever-evocative Temple of Debod. And this year, Summers on the Street will feature an exciting novelty: the Fringe Space, where young bands will be given a chance to showcase their talent in the auditorium of Parque Enrique Tierno Galván.

Also for the second consecutive year, our program will include events at many of the city’s theaters. Thanks to the enthusiastic involvement of the majority of private theaters, Madrid will be one of the European cities with the most cultural activity this summer. The program also includes movie sessions at La Bombilla, with the fascinating Open Air project, and Titirilandia (Puppetland), a festival dedicated to our boldest and most enthusiastic audience – children – which will offer activities at the Puppet Theater in El Retiro and at La Casa Encendida.

This will undoubtedly be one of the most singular “Veranos” to date, an encounter that no one should miss out on. I trust that the enquiring minds of Madrid will rise to the call of “their festival” once more, and that, working together, we can revive the spirit in which this unique event was forged: This Summer, Make It to Madrid.

Welcome to space!

11 Jun

Welcome to space!

We don´t have much to wait before one of the most eccentric dreams becomes true: space travel. Next year, Virgin Galactic, thanks to its millionaire owner Sir Richard Branson, will offer for the first time civilian spaceflight for the price of 125,000 pounds sterling (200,000 dollars). So far, about 300 persons have been selected and have booked to secure a place in the new model, named SS2 (SpaceShip Two), designed by aerospace engineer Burt Rutan.

White Knight Two

Last year was presented the White Knight Two, the mother ship that will carry the SS2 to a sufficient height in order to enable the SS2 to jump into space with its six passengers and two pilots. The journey will take about two hours, including the route from the base and back. During the journey, passengers will be able to enjoy five minutes of zero gravity. The Virgin Galactic is already working in the “spaceport” in New Mexico from where it will take off.

And we wonder, when are they going to offer us space hotels? So far, the closest to a space-room is the suite called “Space Club” offered by Hotel Puerta America (Madrid):

Suite Space Club by Zaha Hadid

Designed by Zaha Hadid, you can find out more about this suite and others in our website WWW.COCOSUITES.COM (note that registering as a user, you will receive all kinds of special services and exclusive benefits on arrival, such as room upgrades, late-check-out, fruit and champagne, etc).

Best Breakfast in the World, according to Madrid Fusion

20 May

For many, breakfast is an art and constitutes the most important meal of the day. That´s why it should be served with time. Therefore, Maricel´s Breakfast, that can be enjoyed for up to three hours, was awarded as “Best Breakfast in the World” according to the food critics gathered at the II Summit of Gastronomy “Madrid Fusion”.

The peculiarities of this famous breakfast at the Hotel Maricel de Mallorca are several. To start, there´s no fixed menu or buffet, but instead a sung menu that varies depending on the ingredients available each season and that includes various services that can be extended according the customer´s will.

This “totally new dining experience” consists of a multi-course tasting menu, including digestive juices and amazing milkshakes or chocolate with spices, butter and crackers, a variety of aromatic breads, mini-yogurts of fruit jam and spices, chocolates and creams, pastries and cakes with fruit and vegetables, and the spectacular “chupito” of tomato with onions and quail egg.

There are infinite ways to start a day, but this is probably one of the best. For more info about this great breakfast, and to know our selection of the best Suites in Mallorca, visit our web site: www.cocosuites.com

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL 2010

18 May

There’s less than a week left for the UEFA Champions League final that will, by means of justice or sheer math, bring face to face the two best clubs in the continent. Five days left for the FC Bayern München and the FC INternazionale Milano to finally meet up in one of the most important days of the year. A day for hell or glory, for laughter or wailing, for love, hate, anxiety, hope, fear, endurance and the fight; all of it packed in 90 heart-stopping minutes. A day to experiment and live through the whole spectrum of human emotions, at least for those who love football. And this May 22nd, all those hearts will meet in Madrid.

The city, showing its historical love for this grand sport, and following the tradition initiated in the 2006 Paris final, has displayed a series of open air activities for the city’s citizens and visitors since May 15th until May 22nd. Thus those around the Plaza del Angel Caído (in the Parque del Retiro), might as well visit the UEFA “Champions Festival” and its activities for all ages such as:

  • The UEFA Champions League trophy exhibit and photo booth for visitors.
  • The “Ultimate Champions” match between some of the best Spanish and international ex players (Saturday 22nd at 14h).
  • The “Theatre of the Champions”, an audiovisual experience displaying a collection of the most glorious moments in the competition’s history since its origins back in 1955.
  • The “Museum of the Champions”, with personal objects of the biggest football teams and players.
  • Special skill exhibit and autograph signing by legendary players.
  • The UEFA “Young Champions Tournament” for mixed teams of 5 for children from 10 to 16.
  • UEFA Information booth with quizzes and prizes.
  • Special football game between Real Madrid CF and Club Atlético de Madrid veterans and a selection of the best Paralympics football teams.
  • Series of matches for visitors and amateurs sponsored and organised by Red Deporte y Cooperación, charity dedicated to use the power of sport to promote development in non OECD countries and advocate for  integration non violent attitudes in Spain.
  • Special stands of the competition’s sponsors (Ford, Mastercard, Sony, UniCredit & Adidas), where a set of various activities will be displayed.

All these activities can be enjoyed up until a few hours prior to the match of the year (that will take place at 20:45h), and even offer the possibility of winning last minute tickets for the match and for the Women’s UEFA Champions League final, taking place on May 20th between Olympique Lyonnais and FFC Turbine Postdam at the Alfonso Pérez coliseum in Getafe.

You can reach the Parque del Retiro, where this UEFA CHAMPIONS FESTIVAL will take place, quickly by foot from CocoSuites hotels such as the Palacio del Retiro, Westin Palace Madrid or Hospes Madrid.
